Wise Trust Board trustee, Professor Richie Poulton FRSNZ, is director of the University of Otago’s Dunedin Multidisciplinary Health and Development Research Unit and leads the team behind the world-renowned Dunedin longitudinal study, which was yesterday awarded the 2022 Rutherford Medal.

The Rutherford Medal is New Zealand’s highest research honour, recognising exceptional contribution to the advancement and promotion of knowledge for the benefit of New Zealand society. It was presented to Professor Poulton and his team at the Research Honours Aotearoa event held at Glenroy Auditorium in Ōtepoti Dunedin.

The 50-year-old Dunedin longitudinal study is one of the most detailed studies of human health and development ever undertaken, following a cohort of over 1,000 study members since birth. The Rutherford Medal award was made in recognition of the study’s insights into the human condition, and the resulting global impact on scientific theory, research, policy and best practice.
